Cougar Village Grand Opening

The University of Houston held the grand opening of the Cougar Village Freshman Housing on August 16, 2010 — just in time for the start of the fall semester.

Construction of the 290,000 square foot “living-learning community” began in July 2009 and was completed in only fourteen months, with the structure completed after only six months. In order to meet the fast-paced schedule, each wing of the modular dorm was constructed using tunnel forms (a forming system in which the walls and one–way slabs are cast simultaneously using high early strength concrete). The tunnel form sections connect at the building corners with columns and two-way flat slab construction to create an open area for student lounges. The building’s exterior is a mix of limestone and brick veneer finished insulated precast panels and curtain walls that provide great views of the campus.

Located on the southern edge of campus, the new 7-story facility houses 1,132 incoming freshman. The state-of-the-art facility includes a learning center, computer lab, fitness room, laundry facility, and game room on the first level, as well as multiple lounges, study rooms, and kitchens on the upper residential floors.

The building was designed by HADP Architecture, built by Hardin Construction Company, and structurally engineered by Structures + Haynes Whaley.
