Haynes Whaley’s Director of Technology Implementation Steve Wilkerson, PhD, P.E., participated as a panelist at SMPS Houston’s Professional Development event: Successful Projects using BIM – BIM Benefits (and Challenges) A Panel Discussion with Architect, Engineer & Contractor on March 8. Steve, sharing a structural engineer’s perspective on BIM, joined Donald Franklin, AIA, of WHR Architects and Sam Sprouse, P.E., of Satterfield & Pontikes Construction on the panel. The program, which was moderated by Dat Lien of Total CAD Systems, allowed SMPS attendees to examine the use of BIM as well as the benefits this technology provides companies and their projects. The speakers, each from different A/E/C disciplines, discussed the collaboration that occurs within a project team through the use of BIM leading to successful projects.
Donald gave an overview on why we use BIM as a design tool. He discussed WHR’s BIM capabilities such as master planning using “smart cubes” and consultant design review and coordination using Navisworks. Steve discussed multiple uses of BIM in structural engineering such as cost estimating in design-build projects and handing-off structural models to assist steel fabricators. Sam reviewed Satterfield & Pontikes’s approach to tracking costs during design using change management tools and using 4d visualization to help keep construction activities on schedule.
