The Houston West Chamber of Commerce selected structural engineering firm Haynes Whaley Associates as the Star Award winner in the Existing Business category, 51-150 employees. Haynes Whaley Principal Wally Ford, P.E. accepted the award last week at the chamber’s annual economic development summit. More than 200 companies were nominated for the award, given in eight categories.

The Houston West Chamber of Commerce reviewed all nominations and selected 68 companies as finalists. A panel of judges from various industries and the public sector evaluated the finalists based on revenue and employee growth, community involvement, and industry recognition. In 2011, Haynes Whaley increased revenues an impressive 48%. The firm donated over $200,000 and 1200 employee hours to charitable and community organizations. Haynes Whaley earned seven national and local building industry awards in 2011.

“West Houston is a great place to do business and it’s also a great place to call home, for our office and many of our employees,” said Larry Whaley, Haynes Whaley Associates President & CEO. “We’ve been honored to be a part of such major projects as BMC Software Campus, City Centre and the Memorial City Campus. Haynes Whaley is fortunate to be located in such a progressive and caring community, and the Star Award is a humbling recognition of the great work our staff has done in and out of the office.”

Dear Houston Office,

As some of you may know my office is showing a remarkable Christmas spirit. Although I did start the Christmas decorations myself, I cannot claim responsibility for the vast majority of the decorations. Every day for the last couple of weeks, something new shows up in my office. This is the progression of events as I think they happened (please note I didn’t start documenting this until it was evident that there was going to be a progression).

I brought the tree and the stocking. The tree I decorated with two Illinois ornaments. The first thing that happened was that more ornaments showed up. Second, the two presents showed up. Next came the small tree besides the photo.

Then came the garland on my wall.

Then, over the weekend my diplomas got gift-wrapped.

Then, I got a gift of dreidels, don’t ask me how they fit into all of this.

Then came the wreath on my window.

Then I got a door mat.

Then came the ornaments under my desk.

Then I received snowflakes for my pictures.

Then my cabinets got a big bow.

Then the rest of my cabinets were decorated.

Then I got a Santa Sack and some gifts.

Then came the big star on my wall and the Santa on my Keyboard.

And that’s why my office looks the way it does.

Im really not sure who is decorating, but it’s been a lot of fun. It certainly got me into the Christmas spirit. Oh, and if someone wants to come clean, there is a small gift in it for you.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Since 2006, Haynes Whaley has been using Revit Structure as a collaborative tool to facilitate interdisciplinary communication and deliver higher-quality, complex projects faster. One of the firm’s first opportunities to work collaboratively with the software was a new academic building for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in Huntsville, Texas. Haynes Whaley relied upon the BIM process and an intelligent, 3D structural model to complete the project with WHR Architects and SpawGlass, the general contractor. “The integrated approach really benefited everyone,” says Steve Wilkerson, Ph.D., P.E., Director of Technology Implementation. “The intelligent 3D models proved valuable for communicating with the team and the owner, and helping them to truly ‘see’ the structural design.”

As a result of this early success, SHSU selected the team to design the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center (PAC) for the College of Fine Arts. This new, $38.5-million public facility includes a recital hall, a dance theatre, an 800-seat concert hall, and an outdoor performance area, as well as beautiful public-space art and practice rooms for dance and music.
Wilkerson, and Adam King, Project Engineer on the PAC contributed to an article with AutoDesk to discuss how the BIM process was used on the PAC, and what emerging trends are being seen in the industry because of this new technology. Click here to see the full article on AutoDesk’s website.

Texas Construction recently announced its yearly Best of 2010 winners. This annual competition recognizes commercial construction and design excellence from across the state of Texas and State of Oklahoma. The awards were “Best in Category” and “Awards of Excellence.”

Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA project won the Excellence Green Building Award. It will be a LEED certified facility, pursuing LEED Gold, and will be the 1st YMCA facility to earn LEED certification. The project was submitted by Tellepsen Builders, the General Contractor for the project. The project design team included Kirksey, architect; The Mathis Group, construction manager; Haynes Whaley Associates, structural engineer; and MEP systems were design-built by Piper-Houston Electric, Graves Mechanical, and Raven Mechanical. It is interesting to note that during a 3 year period since 2010, YMCA of Greater Houston completed a series of 15 projects, all managed by The Mathis Group.

With over 124,000 square feet of membership and programming space, Tellepsen Downtown YMCA is the second largest operating facility in the Greater Houston area, serving over 10,000 members, according to Kirksey’s website. It was certainly a great privilege for Haynes Whaley Associates to be a team member in the design of such a prestigious facility for YMCA of Greater Houston.

According to the Texas Construction, more than 180 projects were nominated by numerous builders or contractors. The submitted projects were judged by an independent jury of industry experts in late August and 65 of these were honored with an award. Projects submitted for the competition included a variety of commercial construction categories, located in Texas or Oklahoma, completed in the past year, and, most importantly, did not involve a construction-related fatality. The jury awarded projects based on entry criteria including overcoming challenges and teamwork, safety, innovation and contribution to the industry/community, construction quality and craftsmanship, function, and aesthetic quality of design.
